Over the past several decades, and especially in the state of Hawaii, the popularity of bully breeds has skyrocketed. (A bully breed would typically be a dog with a muscular body, broad powerful head, and a short coat, especially a pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrorizer, rottweiler, bulldog, bull mastiff, , etc.). Along with that, the incidences of dog bites has increased dramatically.
Please understand that I am not entering into the debate on whether its the owner or the dog. I am, for all practicable purposes, simply looking at the statistics and representing injured people injured as the result of a dog bite. In order to recover for your injuries, the owner of the dog must have been negligent in some way: was the dog a vicious animal that had bitten someone previously? Was the dog loose without a leash? Was the dog abused, neglected, or trained to fight? All of these factors come into play. Some of the worst cases are when children are injured as the result of a vicious animal bites. Dog bites are serious injuries. Go to the emergency room immediately and call the police. Maui has an animal control officer that will get involved immediatley.
In my experience, bully breeds can rip and tear flesh like no other breed, have powerful jaws, and don't let go if they are angry and excited. Especially in abused animals that have been mistreated or taught to fight, their temperament is unpredictable. I've seen cases where dogs were shot or stabbed many times during an attack, and they still hung on to their victim until they inflict the maximum amount of damage. Above all, be alert as to your surroundings, protect your children by teaching them not to pet stray dogs, and take the time to keep a weapon handy, even ifs only a walking stick or a pocket knife. It might save your life.
